Challenging traditions

Traditioner är viktiga - vi har ofta samma dekorationer för olika högtider, vi äter samma mat och firar på nästan samma sätt - år efter år. Detta är något som innebär kontinuitet och gör att vi känner oss trygga. Vi vet vad som väntar.

Men tänk om vi skulle "utmana" traditionerna och byta dem mot något nytt? Tja, vi är alla olika så det skulle vara omöjligt att säga att två personer skulle reagera på samma sätt, men det är en intressant tanke - är inte det?

Ta en julgran som ett exempel, ovan är den typ av julgran vi är vana att se – ja, jag vet att det inte är dekorerad och jag vet att det finns massor av höstlöv på den J - men försök att tänka att det är en julgran.

Traditions are important – we often have the same decorations for holidays, eat the same food and celebrate in almost the same way - year after year. This is something that means continuity and makes us feel safe. We know what to expect.

But what if we would challenge the traditions and exchange them for something new? Well, we are all different so it would be impossible to say that 2 persons would react in the same way, but it is an interesting thought - isn’t it?

Take a Christmas tree as an example, above is the sort of Christmas tree we are used to see – well I know it isn’t decorated and I know there are lots of autumn leaves on it J - but try to imagine.

Detta är också en julgran - Vad? Jag kan tänka mig att många av er tänker så just nu, men om några veckor kommer ni att förstå vad jag menar.

Jag tvivlar på att jag kommer att ha denna som den enda julgranen utan det blir mer som ett komplement - en dekoration. Jag vill ju ha mina traditioner också J

This is also a Christmas tree – What? I can imagine many of you are thinking that right know, but in a couple of weeks you will see what I mean.

I doubt I will have this as the only Christmas tree but more as a complement – a decoration. I also love my traditions J

Spets/Lace - Jag bara älskar spets som julgransprydnader. Sedan många år har vi haft vita spetsdekorationer ("freestanding lace") och röda julkulor tillsammans med elektriskt ljus i vår traditionella gröna julgran. Vackert och enkelt.

Spets/Lace = Vitt - men vad händer om vi skulle utmana det också?

Lace – I just love lace as Christmas tree decorations. For many years now we have had white "freestanding lace" decorations and red Christmas bulbs along with electric candles in our traditional green Christmas tree. Beautiful and simple.

Lace = White – but what if we would challenge that as well?

För mig är jul = röd - så jag tänkte göra några röda "freestanding lace/spets" stjärnor J - för att använda med min ”otraditionella” julgran. Resultatet kommer att publiceras när den är färdig. Kanske du kommer att få några glimtar under processen.

For me Christmas = Red – so I thought I would make some red "Freestanding Lace" stars J - to use with my "untraditional" Christmas tree. The result will be published when it is finished. Maybe you will get some glimpses during the process.

Låt oss tala lite om "lace/spets" och då i synnerhet fristående spets ("freestanding lace") som detta är. Inte alla "Spets/Lace designs" kan användas som fristående spets om du inte gör som jag har gjort här. Så se till att den design som du kommer att använda verkligen är "fristående"/"freestanding" annars kommer den att falla isär när man löser upp det vattenlösliga mellanlägg man broderat designen på.

Let’s talk a bit about lace and then in particular "freestanding lace" which this is. Not all designs can be used as "freestanding lace" if you don’t do as I have done here. So make sure the design you will use really is "freestanding lace" otherwise it will fall apart when the water soluble stabilizer, onto which the design is embroidered, is dissolved.

Fristående lace/spets ("freestanding lace")  är broderad på vattenlösligt mellanlägg. Det finns olika typer av vattenlösligt mellanlägg - plast (den tjockare versionen) och "väv varianten" som är mycket stabilare att brodera på. Fördelen med plast är att den går lätt att riva bort - men nackdelen är att nålen perforerar plasten så att den lätt går sönder och det är inte bra om det händer under broderi processen. Så om du använder tjock plast använd minst två lager.

"Freestanding lace" is embroidered on water soluble stabilizer. There are different kind of stabilizers – plastic (the thicker version) and “fabric type” which is much more stable to embroider on. The advantage of the plastic is that it tears away easily – but the disadvantage is that the needle perforates the plastic so that it easily breaks and that is not a good thing to happen during the embroidery process. So if you use thick plastic use at least 2 layers.

Använd även samma färg i undertråden som i övertråden så blir dina lace/spets dekorationer lika fina på bägge sidor.

If you use the same colour/thread in the bobbin your Lace decorations will look equally good on both sides.

Det blir en hel del spill med vattenlösligt mellanlägg och de kostar ju lite mer än vanligt mellanlägg. Men du kan göra som jag har gjort här använda en ”ram” och bara använda så mycket vattenlösligt mellanlägg som behövs i det utskurna området i ramen. Sätt lite lim runt kanterna på det utskurna området i mitten av ramen och lägg sedan ett lager av vattenlösligt mellanlägg där. Fäst med nålar som visas i bilden.

There are a lot of waste with the water soluble stabilizers and these cost a bit more than ordinary stabilizers . But you can do as I have done here use a pre-made frame and just use as much as needed in the cut out area in the frame. Put some glue stick around the edges of the cut out area in the middle of the frame and put one layer of stabilizer there. Secure with pins as shown in the photo.

Sedan kan du lägga på ett extra lager av vattenlösligt mellanlägg innan du broderar. Jag har inte fäst det, men det beror naturligtvis på det vattenlösliga mellanlägget och hur starkt det är. Om jag använder "väv typen" av vattenlösligt mellanlägg så använder jag bara ett lager. Ett annat bra råd är att inte använda större broderbåge än man behöver och bara brodera ett i taget.

Then you can put on an extra layer of stabilizer before you embroider. I have not fastened it but that of course depends on the stabilizer. If I use the “fabric type” of stabilizer I only use one layer. Another good advice is to use a hoop in the size of the embroidery design. Do not use a too big hoop and embroider one design at a time.

Här är mina två stjärnor av "freestanding lace/spets". Jag har inte tagit bort det vattenlösliga mellanlägget ännu - men allt man behöver göra är att lägga dem i en skål med ljummet vatten. Lite sköljmedel kommer att påskynda processen - med en trevlig doft när det torkat (frivilligt). Vill man ha dem ytterligare stärkta kan man låta dem ligga i en blandning av vattenlösligt mellanlägg (använd spillbitar) och vatten i en skål. Låt dem sedan torka och stryk dem mellan frottéhanddukar så plattas inte tråden till.

Dessa designs är från ett av mina favorit design kort från Husqvarna Viking #53 Christmas Lace. Så mycket glädje jag haft av det både för egen del och som uppskattade presenter.

Here are my 2 "freestanding lace" designs – I haven’t removed the water soluble stabilizer yet – but all you have to do is to put them in a bowl of lukewarm water. A bit of fabric softener will speed up the process – with the benefit of a nice smell (optional). If you want further stability in the designs soak them in a mixture of water soluble stabilizer (use scraps) and water in a bowl. Let them dry and iron between terry towels so that the thread doesn't get flat and shiny.

These designs are from one of my favourite design cards from Husqvarna Viking #53 Christmas Lace. So much joy these designs have given me both for my own decorations and as much appreciated gifts.
