Crazy Quilt Blocks

Design embroidered 4 times and mirrored vertically and horizontally

Jag bara älskar Crazy Quilt Blocks, de är perfekta att göra i brodermaskinens båge. Jag har gjort två små "dukar" eller snarare en är en liten löpare och den andra en liten fyrkantig duk. Dessa är gjorda med designs från ”CRAZY-PATCHWORK-BLÖCKE”  från Stickbär - och görs helt "in-the-hoop" (blocken alltså).

Tillsammans med bilderna i denna blog kommer jag att visa en mycket ”fiffig” lösning som jag kom på medan jag sydde dessa block - åtminstone har jag inte sett eller läst om det någon annanstans. Jag tycker att det går så mycket tyg till spillo när man gör dessa typer av block. Jag har försökt att skära bitar efter mallar, men jag får dem sällan rätt eller så saknas en liten bit eller så kommer de inte i rätt position. Så för det mesta använder jag den metod som ger mycket spill eftersom det är snabbare och resultatet blir bättre. Men nu har jag ett alternativ.

I just love Crazy Quilt Blocks, they embroider so well “in-the-hoop”. I have made two small “table cloths” or rather one is a small table runner and the other one a small square table cloth. These are made with designs from ”CRAZY-PATCHWORK-BLÖCKE”, from Stickbär, and they are made entirely “in-the-hoop” (the blocks).

Along with the photos in this blog I will show you a very “clever” solution I “discovered” while sewing these blocks - well at least I haven’t seen or read about it anywhere else. I think there is so much fabric wasted when you make these kinds of blocks. I have tried to cut pieces from cut out templates but I seldom get them right or there is a tiny bit missing or they are not in the right position. So most of the time I go for the “fabric waste” as it is quicker and the result is better. But now I have an alternative.

När jag höll på med dessa block insåg jag plötsligt att tänk om ... ... .... och jag försökte och försökte, fick lim på mina fingrar, brände mina fingrar på strykjärnet - det blev många misslyckanden innan det hela var självklart hur jag skulle göra det. Jag har nu gjort en hel del block med den här metoden och det fungerar och jag har ett minimum av ”tygspill” och bitarna är där de ska vara.

When doing these blocks I suddenly realized that what if………. and I tried and tried, got glue on my fingers, burned my fingers on the iron – there were many failures before it all was obvious how I should do it. I have now done quite a few blocks using this method and it works and I have a minimum of fabric waste and the pieces are where they should be.

This instruction will be in three languages – Swedish, English and German.

These are the steps and of course you have to be precise in placement and cutting of the pieces.

1.

Skriv ut en pappersmall från ditt Embroidery Software eller så kan du sy den första färgen på designen på ett mellanlägg som spänts i broderbågen för att göra en "mall" och använda den på samma sätt som pappersmallen.

Print a paper template from your Embroidery Software or you could sew the first colour of the design on stabilizer to make a “template” and use that the same way as the paper template.

Druckt eine Papier-Vorlage mit Hilfe der Stick-Software aus. Alternative ohne SW: stickt die erste Farbe des Designs auf Stickvlies und verwendet diese Vorlage genauso wie die Papier-Vorlage.

2.

Analysera designen, i vilken ordning de olika delarna kommer att sys och vilka sidor som ska sammanfogas/sys ihop med en annan sida. Jag har numrerat bitarna i den ordning de kommer att sys och jag har ritat 3 små x på den sida som kommer att sammanfogas med en föregående söm (placeringslinje).

Analyze the design, in which order the different pieces will be stitched and what sides that are to be pieced to another side. I have numbered the pieces in the order they will be sewn and I have put 3 small x on the side which will be matched to a previous seam (placement line).

Analysiert die Stickdatei, um zu sehen, in welcher Reihenfolge die verschiedenen Stücke genäht werden und wo die Seiten zu einer anderen Seite umgeschlagen werden. Ich habe die Stücke in der Reihenfolge ihres Nähens nummeriert und habe die Seite mit 3 kleinen x markiert, die später auf die vorher genähte Naht aufgelegt, fest gesteppt und später umgeschlagen wird.

Nu ska du klippa ut mallar, men för denna metod behöver du 2 st varav en är spegelvänd (horisontellt). Det enklaste sättet är att sätta ett tomt papper bakom mallen när du klipper ut bitarna. Se till att papperna hålls samman. Då kan du spegelvända de tomma bitarna och tejpa fast dem i de numrerade bitarna (se bild). De numrerade bitarna kommer att vara till vänster och den tomma till höger (när man tittar på dem).

Now you are going to cut out the pieces but for this method you will need 2 pieces of which one is mirrored (horizontally). The easiest way is to put a blank paper behind the template when you cut out the pieces. Make sure the papers stick together. Then you mirror the blank paper and tape it to the numbered piece (see picture). The numbered piece will be to the left and the blank to the right (when looking at them).

Jetzt werden die Teile nach den Schablonen ausgeschnitten, beachtet aber bitte, dass jeweils eine Schablone horizontal gespiegelt werden muss. Der einfachste Weg ist es, ein leeres Blatt Papier hinter die Vorlage zu legen, bevor sie ausgeschnitten wird. Achten Sie darauf, die Papiere zusammen zu kleben. You will then fold it together. The fold with the masking tape is at the “bottom”.

Brodera ut “mallen” på mellanlägget i broderbågen. Numrera bitarna precis som på pappersmallen.

Sew the “template” on a piece of stabilizer in the hoop and mark the areas with the corresponding number.

Stickt die erste Farbe und damit die "Vorlage" auf ein Stück Stickvlies und markiert die Stücke mit der entsprechenden Nummer.

6.

Som du ser passar pappermallarna perfekt i motsvarande bit på den utsydda “mallen”.

As you can see, the folded paper pieces match the areas on the sewn template.

Die gefaltete Papierstücke passen genau auf die gestickte Vorlage.

7.

Till den första biten, Nr.1, räcker det att klippa ut den som den är med sömsmån. Jag har använt mig av 10 mm sömsmån, OK kanske lite mycket men för att vara på säkra sidan.

For the first area marked No 1 you can just cut a piece “as it is” with a seam allowance. I have used 10 mm, OK perhaps a bit much but to be on the safe side.

Für das erste Stück, markiert mit Nr. 1, verwendet bitte ausreichend Nahtzugabe. Ich habe 10 mm verwendet, OK vielleicht ein bisschen viel, aber ich wollte auf der sicheren Seite sein.

8.

Lägg den utklippta tygbiten - Nr. 1 - på det område som är markerat med Nr. 1 på mallen. Sy nästa placeringslinje.

Place that piece on the area which is marked with No 1 and sew the next placement line.

The following applies for all the pieces that are going to be sewn to another fabric piece. The pictures will show piece No. 4 but all pieces are done in the same way. The important thing is to remember to put the numbered side up and the marked folded edge down towards the seam allowance at the bottom.

Folgendes gilt für alle Stücke, die zu einem anderen Stück Stoff umgenäht werden. Die Bilder zeigen Stück Nr. 4, aber alle Teile sind in gleicher Weise gearbeitet. 10.

Put some small dots of water soluble glue stick (please use sparingly otherwise it will be hard to remove from the fabric later) on the seam allowance below the edge with 3 x. 

Bringt einige kleine Punkte wasserlöslichen Klebestift (bitte sparsam verwenden, sonst es schwer sein, es später aus dem Stoff zu entfernen) auf die Nahtzugabe unter den Rand mit den 3 x.

11.

Vik ner det översta pappret (här Nr. 4). Se till att mallen ligger kvar i samma position på tyget.

Fold the top paper (here No 4) down over that edge. Please make sure the paper piece stays in place on the fabric.

12.

Stryk på svag värme så klistret torkar.

Iron on low heat just long enough to dry the glue.

Cut around the edges with a seam allowance.

Turn the piece so that the wrong side of the fabric is showing. You will prepare all the remaining fabric pieces this way. Don’t forget the seam allowances.

16.

We will now continue to place piece No 2. The fabric piece is prepared the same way as described above.

17.

Ta tygbiten med den ditklistrade pappersmallen. Lägg biten med Nr. 2 precis på linjerna för bit Nr. 2 på den sydda mallen (se de röda linjerna). Tygbiten kommer att ligga med avigsidan upp och det blir rätt sedan när den viks upp.

Take the fabric with the glued paper piece and put the No 2 paper piece exactly matching the lines in the area with the same number (see red lines). The fabric should be wrong side up and laying in the wrong direction. It will be right when it is folded up later.

Ta bort pappersmallen och vik upp tyget. Det ska passa perfekt. Om du vill kan du fästa tyget med en liten tejpbit.

Remove the paper template and fold up the fabric. It will now be in perfect position. If you want you can fasten the fabric with a small piece of masking tape.

Entfernt die Papier-Vorlage und faltet den Stoff zurück. Er liegt nun in perfekter Position. Der Stoff kann mit einem kleinen Stück Klebeband fixiert werden.


20.

Fortsätt som beskrivits ovan för alla bitar i nummerordning.

Proceed as described with the pieces in the numerical order.

This is how the block looks when it is still in the hoop. There are so many uses for these designs. I have chosen to use the same colour for the lovely stitches, but they can be done with different colours. This block and another will be part of some other projects I will show you later.

Pocket Square/Näsduk

Eftersom jag sydde en näsduk till en kavajficka för ett tag sen fick jag den stora äran att sy ytterligare en J. Denna skulle vara lite mer modern. Ni vet dessa färgglada näsdukar man ser idag. Eftersom den skulle matcha en grön slips så blev det ett grönt fodertyg.

As I sewed a pocket square a while ago I was trusted to make another one J. This one would be a bit more modern. You know those colourful pocket squares handkerchiefs we see today. Since it would match a green tie I used a green lining fabric.

Jag ville ha lite struktur på den så jag passade på att prova en ny fyllyta ”Multi Wave Fill” som kommit i mitt 5 D Embroidery Software. Dessutom provade jag på att sy näsduken som skulle vara färdig bredd 300x300 mm i min stora båge man måste vända (Majestic Hoop). Lite trixigt men det gick.

I wanted to have some structure on it so I took the opportunity to try a new fill "Multi Wave Fill" which arrived in my 5 D Embroidery Software. I made this bag for clothespins a couple of years ago, but it is still just as useful. The pattern was found in a Norwegian Quilting magazine, Quiltemagasinet, and the pattern is made ​​by AnnAKa.

Genvägar till Nostalgi / Shortcuts to Nostalgia

I have showed you some cross stitch embroideries some “blogs” ago. Those I embroidered on dish cloths. To make even more items with that nostalgic feeling I decided to take some short cuts by using ready bought items and decorate them with some embroidery. This is one of the things I love most with having an embroidery machine, being able to transform ready bought items to something unique.

This white pillow case is one example. I embroidered an F on the middle of the upper half of the pillowcase. White on white is so beautiful and doesn’t it add an old fashion feeling?

So as you can see it is very easy to add an old fashion feeling to ready bought products. Not to mention that you can personalize them as you like.

Nyckelringar del 2 / Key Chains part 2

Här följer några bilder som beskriver hur du syr denna nyckelring.

Here are some pictures of the steps sewing this Key Chain.

1.

Börja med att spänna fast rivbart mellanlägg i broderbågen. Jag har använt min ram för att spara på mellanlägg (som jag berättade om i ett tidigare inlägg 11 Maj).

Start by hooping tear away stabilizer in the hoop. I have used my pre-made frame to save on stabilizer (see previous blog on that May 11).

2.

Sy de två första stegen (färg nr 1 och 2) på det rivbara mellanlägget

Sew the first two steps (colour no 1 and 2) on the stabilizer.

3.

Ta en bit band. Du får prova dig fram till vilken längd du tycker är lagom. Tänk på att det även ska gå ner till mitten av nyckelringshållaren. Vik det dubbelt och sätt lite vattenlösligt limstift emellan på den nedre delen av bandet. Stryk så klistret torkar. Som syns på bilden så slutar mittlinjen där nålen är. Bandet ska alltså gå en liten bit nedanför. Fäst bandet i överdelen med lite maskeringstejp så ligger den på plats medan du broderar.

Take a piece of ribbon. You will have to decide the length you want for yourself. Remember that it will also go down to the middle of the key ring holder. Fold it in half and add some water-soluble glue stick in between, on the lower part of the ribbon - wrong side together. Iron to “dry the glue”. As shown in the picture the end of the line is where the needle is. The ribbon will then go a little bit below. Secure the folded ribbon at the top with a bit of masking tape so that stays in place during embroidery.

Put a piece of felt on top of the outlined area. Make sure you have some extra fabric around the outline area as it is going to be cut out with a seam allowance later.

6.

Sew the fourth step (colour no 4), the second outline which will secure the felt to the stabilizer. It is after this step any additional designs, letters or so will be sewn when the embroidery file is sewn out.

As this is the embroidery design you can see the letter I have inserted from my Software before the final step. I also had to change the order of colours as I had “inserted an embroidery file into another”. So the letter or other embroidery design is sewn before the back fabric is attached to the back of the hoop.

Innan den slutliga "kontursömmen" sys måste du ta bort broderbågen från brodermaskinen och placera en bit filt/tyg på baksidan av mellanlägget i broderbågen. Se till att tygbiten täcker det sydda området med marginal. Fäst med maskeringstejp. Se till att inte ta bort mellanlägg eller tyg från broderbågen.

Before sewing the final outline you must remove the hoop and put a piece of felt/fabric on the back of the design. Make sure the fabric covers the outlined area plus “seam allowance” as previously described. Fasten with some masking tape. Make sure you do not remove anything from the hoop.

Den femte steget och sista färgen i vår stygnsatta fil var den sista rakstygnslinjen (konturlinjen) som i detta fall var en trippel söm. Denna syr samman det övre och undre tyglagret.

The fifth step and final colour in our digitizing file was the final outline which in this case was a triple stitch. This one secures the top and back layers together.

10.

Ta bort broderbågen från maskinen och nu kan du ta bort mellanlägget från broderbågen. Riv bort mellanlägget från filt/tyg.

Remove the hoop from the machine and now you may remove the stabilizer from the hoop. Tear away the stabilizer from the felt/fabric

This is what it looks like when the stabilizer is torn away. We will now cut around the outlined area with pinking shears.

Börja med att klippa runt tre sidor som på bilden. Klipp inte runt den översta ännu, om du gör det kommer du att klippa av bandet!

Start by cutting around three sides as shown in the picture. Do not cut the top side yet. If you do you will cut off the ribbon!

13.

Börja med att vika undan en sida samt bandet och klipp sen den ”fria sidan”. Vik sen undan bandet och klipp den andra sidan. Det gäller alltså att hela tiden hålla undan bandet så man inte klipper av det.

Start by folding one side plus the ribbon away. Cut the remaining “free side” with the scissor. Then you fold away the ribbon and cut the other side. The important thing is to fold the ribbon away before cutting each side of the felt/fabric.

14.

Nu är den färdig, och det som återstår är att sätta på själva nyckelringen på bandet.

Now it is finished and all that is left it to put the ring on which the keys are supposed to be on the ribbon.

Nyckelringar del 1 / Key Chains part 1

Jag gillar verkligen att göra små saker in “in-the-hoop”. Det är faktiskt inte så svårt. I really like to do "in-the-hoop" projects. It is actually not that difficult. I usually say "imagine that you do every step by hand and on your regular sewing machine" and put these steps and seams into seams and stitches in your Embroidery Software. These Key Chains are the perfect little gifts and takes almost no time to sew. I have put on a large and a small "ring", depending on how many keys you will put on it. I will do a series in two parts on how to make these Key Chains and I will begin with the digitizing part. Since there are so many different Embroidery Software, I will keep it fairly "general" and not go in to what buttons to press and so on.

Steg 1

Detta är faktiskt hur kommer du att börja - med en bild av en form du vill ha för din nyckelring. Storleken är upp till dig, men min är 60x40 millimeter. Du kan rita din ”form” och scanna in den eller så kanske ditt Embroidery Software har en ”rit del” så att du kan ”rita” upp bilden direkt i ditt Embroidery Software. Men man kan ju också göra sin bild i ett annat bildbearbetningsprogram och spara i ett format som det Embroidery Software man har kan läsa.

Du kommer att börja med att göra en rakstygnslinje=”running stitches” efter linjen på denna form. Detta kommer att vara färg nr 1. Det är en mycket bra idé att välja olika färger för att maskinen ska stanna mellan varje moment - jag föredrar att använda färger som jag inte kommer att använda på annat sätt än att ”sätta ihop” denna nyckelring. Varför ? Jo det är bra att kunna urskilja dessa steg i en design. Syftet med detta steg är att sy en placeringskontur där du senare kommer att placera tyget.

Step 1

This is actually how you will start – with a picture of a shape you want for your Key Chain. The size is up to you, but mine is 60x40 millimetres. You can draw your "shape" and scan it or maybe your Embroidery Software has a "Paint or Draw part" so that you can "draw" the image directly in your embroidery software. Or you can draw the shape in another graphics software and save in a format your Embroidery Software can read.

You will start by making a running stitch along the line of this shape. This will be colour no 1. It is a very good idea to choose different colours to make the machine stop between each step – I prefer to use colours that I will not use for anything else than for the steps of assembling this item. Why? Well, it is very useful to be able to separate these steps. The purpose of this step is to sew a placement outline where you later will place your fabric.

Steg 2
Välj en ny färg - färg nr 2 - och gör ett hopp stygn till mitten av den övre linjen - såvida du inte startade därifrån (1). Gör en rakstygnslinje=running stitch ner till mitten av ”formen” (2). Syftet med detta är att göra en placeringslinje för bandet.

Step 2

Choose a new colour - colour no 2 - and make a jump stitch to the middle of the top -unless you started from there (1). Make a running stitch down to the middle of the shape (2). The purpose of this is to make a placement line for the ribbon.

Steg 3
Välj en ny färg - färg nr 3 -  och stygnsätt med en rakstygnslinje=running stitches från slutet av linjen i mitten du nyss stygnsatt (1) ca 7 millimeter till vänster om den vertikala mittenlinjen (2). Därefter forstätter du till höger (3) - håll samma avstånd från mittlinjen. Fortsätt sen med en rakstygnslinje=running stitches upp till (4) och (5) och håll samma avstånd från mittenlinjen. På detta sätt kommer du att ha en spegelvänt  Z. Syftet med detta är att hålla bandet på plats.

Step 3

Choose a new colour - colour no 3 - and digitize a running stitch from the end of the line in the middle you just digitized (1) about 7 millimetres to the left of the vertical centre. Continue with running stitches to the right (3) and keep the same distance to the middle line. Then you continue the running stitches up to (4) and (5) keeping the same distance to the middle line. This way you will have a mirrored Z. The purpose of this is to hold the ribbon in place.

Steg 4
Välj en ny färg - färg nr 4 -  och kopiera den första rakstygnslinjen=running stitches som var hela området runt din form (steg 1) - se till att de är exakt ovanpå varandra. Syftet med detta är att sy det översta lagret av filt / tyg på plats.

Step 4

Choose a new colour - colour no 4 - and copy the first running stitch which was the “outline” (step 1)– make sure they are exactly on top of each other. The purpose of this is to sew the top layer of felt/fabric in place.

Steg 5
Välj en ny färg - färg nr 5 - och kopiera den första rakstygnslinjen=running stitches som var hela området runt din form (steg 1) ytterligare en gång - se till att de är exakt ovanpå varandra. Syftet med detta är att sy fast det understa filt/tyglagret som kommer att fästas på baksidan av bågen. Denna rakstygnslinje=running stitches kan vara en tredubbel linje=triple stitch som jag gjorde på den röda Nyckelringen eller en dekorsöm som på den gröna.

Step 5

Choose a new colour - colour no 5 - and copy the first running stitches once more which was the “outline” (step 1) – make sure they are exactly on top of each other. The purpose of this step is to sew the bottom felt/fabric layer which will be attached to the back of the hoop. This running stitch can be a triple stitch as I did on the red Key Chain or a decorative stitch as on the green one.

Mellan Steg 4 och 5 - ytterligare utsmyckningar kan infogas mellan dessa steg. Exempelvis som jag gjort – broderat en bokstav. Var noga med att placera steg 5 som sista steg. Detta innebär att du kan behöva ändra ordning på färgerna. Detta steg kan oftas göra i andra delar av Embroidery Software än just stygnsättningsdelen, vilket innebär att man kan behöva göra om den färdiga stygnsättningsfilen till en broderifil, beroende på broderisoftware. Oftas görs det efter att man är klar med själva stygnsättningsfilen. 

Between Step 4 and 5 – additional embellishments may be inserted. I have inserted a letter. Be sure to place step 5 as the last step. This means that you might have to change order of the colours. This step can often be done in other parts of the Embroidery Software than the digitizing part, which means that you might have to convert the digitizing file to an embroidery file before doing this, depending on your software. It is often done after the digitizing file is finished.

Steg 6
Glöm inte fäststygn och att test-sy din design. Du kan behöva göra justeringar. Kom ihåg "Övning ger färdighet"

Don’t forget Tie Stitches and to test sew your design. You might have to make adjustments. Remember “Practice makes Perfect”
