Salt and Pepper – Black and White – part 3

Så där ja, har ni nu stygnsatt ”grytlappslinjerna” enligt beskrivningen i förra blogginlägget?

Då är det dags att vi syr grytlappen.

Böja med att spänna ett tunt bomullstyg och vadd i brodérbågen. Var noga med att använda en vadd som passar till grytlappar och tål värme.

There you go - have you digitized the lines for the potholder as described in my previous blog post?

Then it's time that we sew the potholder.

Start by hooping a thin cotton fabric with a batting that is suitable for potholders and is heat-resistant.

Jag använder min 200x200 millimeters brodérbåge.

Spänner man bomullstyget i brodérbågen kan man ju lägga vadden löst ovanpå bommullstyget - om man har ont om vadd. Har man dessutom en ”tråckel funktion” på sin maskin så fungerar detta alldeles utmärkt.

I use my 200x200 millimeters hoop.

If you hoop the cotton fabric in the hoop you can put the batting on top of the cotton fabric if you are short on batting. If your machine has a basting function – that is perfect to use to fasten the batting to the cotton fabric.

Börja med att brodera den mittersta placeringslinjen.

Där på ska tygbitarna läggas. Jag har valt att lägga tygbitarna på den högra sidan för att sedan kunna vika den översta till vänster.

Start by embroidering the middle placement line. This is the line the fabric pieces will be put on.

I have chosen to put the fabrics on the right side to be able to fold the top fabric over to the left side.

Lägg den vita tygbiten underst. Se till att den överlappar mittlinjen med en sömsmån.

Put the white fabric piece in the bottom; make sure it overlaps the sewn line with a seam allowance.

Sen lägger man det svarta tyget ovanpå. Sy nästa söm - som syr samman tygbitarna. Beroende på vilken färg du vill ha till vänster eller höger så får man välja vilken ordning de ska läggas i.

Then add the black fabric on top of the white fabric. Sew the next seam that sews the fabric pieces together. Depending on the color you want to the left or right you have to choose what order they should be in.

När sömmen är sydd viker man över det svarta tyget till vänstra sidan och "fingerpressar" sömmen. Man kan också ta bort brodérbågen och pressa med ett mini strykjärn.

When the seam is sewn you fold the top fabric to the left side and "finger press" the seam. You can also remove the hoop from the machine and press the seam with a mini iron.

Brodera sen den ”yttre ramen” som håller tygerna på plats. Se till att tygbitarna ligger slätt och inte får några veck under själva sömnaden.

Then the “outline” seam - around the hoop area - that keeps the fabrics in place will be embroidered. Make sure the fabric pieces lays flat and that there are no folds during the embroidery of these “Running Stitches” lines.

Nu är det dags att brodera själva broderierna. Jag har valt att brodera ”Salt broderiet” på den vänstra sidan som är svart – med vit tråd.

”Peppar broderiet” kommer att broderas på den vita sidan - med svart tråd.

Eftersom jag bara spänt tyg och vadd i bågen så lägger jag en bit rivbart mellanlägg under bågen innan jag börjar brodera.

Now the embroidery designs will be embroidered. I have chosen to embroider the "Salt embroidery" on the left side which is black - with white thread.

The ”Pepper embroidery" will be embroidered on the white side - with black thread.

Since I just hooped fabric and batting in the hoop I insert a piece of tear away stabilizer under the hoop before I start to embroider the designs.

När bägge broderierna är klara så tar man bort brodérbågen från maskinen. Ta bort överflödiga rester av det rivbara mellanlägget.

Klipp till en bit tyg för baksidan och fäst det på baksidan. Man kan ju använda temporärt ”klisterspray” eller som jag gjort sätta dit ett antal duttar av vattenlösligt limstift.

When both embroidery designs are finished - remove the hoop from the machine. Remove excess tear-away stabilizer from the back of the potholder in the hoop.

Cut a piece of fabric for the back and put it on the back of the potholder in the hoop. One can use temporary "adhesive spray" or as I have - several dots of water-soluble glue stick.

Vänd sedan brodérbågen så att framsidan är upp. Sen tar jag mitt lilla ministrykjärn och ”stryktorkar” limmet.

Then I turn the hoop so that the right side is facing up and “iron the glue dry” with my mini iron.

Sen sätter man tillbaka bågen i maskinen och syr de avslutande sömmarna – som är den i mitten och runt om för att fästa bakstycket.

Jag har markerat med små gröna prickar där mittensömmen sys. Denna linje är ju en del av hela den avslutande sömmen och gör att det nästan quiltas ”in-the-ditch”.

Put the hoop back onto the machine and embroider the finishing seams – which are the middle seam and the final outline around the potholder area. These seams are to fasten the fabric at the back.

I have also marked the middle line with small green dots. This line which is part of the final seam - makes it look almost stitched “in-the ditch”.

Här är grytlappen borttagen från brodérbågen. Klipp bort trådar och pressa om så behövs.

Here the potholder is removed from the hoop. Cut away excess threads and press if needed.

Sen skär man bort runt den sydda linjen med en sömsmån efter önskemål. Här ska vi nämligen sätta på en kantremsa (binding).

Jag skär med en 7 millimeters sömsmån för jag vill att min kantremsa ska vara cirka 9 millimeter.

Den yttre ramen har två syften – dels att hålla samman alla lager men också vara en riktlinje för var sömmen på kantremsan (binding) ska sys. Sömmen för kantremsan ska alltså hamna innanför den så den inte syns när grytlappen är klar.

Then you cut around the sewn line with a seam allowance as required. Here you will put the binding.

I have cut a 7 millimeters seam allowance because I want my binding to be about 9 millimeters.

The sewn outline has two purposes – to hold all layers together and to be a guide for the seam of the binding. The seam of the binding should be a bit inside that seam so that the seam isn’t visible once the binding is attached.

Så här ser det ut när den är färdig skuren runt om. Nu är det bara att sy på kantremsan och sätta dit en hängare.

This is how it looks when all sides are cut according to the desired seam allowance. Now all that is left is to sew the binding and then put on a hanger.

Så här blev resultatet. Jag kan inte vara mer nöjd och kombinationen svart och vitt med salt och peppar kunde inte vara mer rätt.

Here is the finished result. I couldn’t be more pleased. The combination of black and white with the “Salt and Pepper” embroideries couldn’t be more right.
