Covering Raw Edges - part 2

Preparations, calculations and materials needed

Till att börja med ska man bestämma storleken man vill ha på väskan/kassen. Jag vill ha en väska som rymmer några tidningar och lite mer - men inte en matkasse.

Det lättaste är att ta en bit tyg – lägga på en tidning och måtta på ett ungefär hur stor kassen ska vara.

To begin with you should determine the size you want the bag to be. I want a bag that holds a few magazines and a bit more - but not a bag for groceries.

The easiest is to take a piece of fabric - put on a magazine and measure roughly the size the bag should be.

Men lite är man också beroende av den design man sytt. Detta är ju något man bör tänka på när man väljer design så att den passar in i måtten man bestämt sig för.

Min design är ungefär 15 centimeter bred och 32 centimeter hög. Min första tanke var att göra en väska som var cirka 34-35 centimeter bred och 40-43 centimeter hög.

Med tanke på min design och att jag vill jämna till måtten så kommer de yttre måtten på kassen bli ca 35 x 41-42 centimeter.

Framstycket kommer att bestå av en mittendel och 2 sidstycken.

However, it is also dependent on the design you’ve sewn. This is something you should consider when choosing a design so that it fits into the dimensions you have decided on.

My design is approximately 15 centimeters (6 inches) wide and 32 centimeters (12 ½ inches) high. My first thought was to make a bag that was about 34-35 centimeters (13 ½ - 13 3/4 inches) wide and 40-43 centimeters (16-17 inches) high.

Considering the size of my design - I want to adjust the measurements so the external dimensions of the tote bag will be about 35 centimeters (13 3/4 inches) wide and 41-42 centimeters (16 ¼ inches) high.

The front part will consist of a midsection (the center part with the embroidery/appliqué design) and two side panels.

Clothes care brushes - very useful to have for this project

Så det jag behöver förbereda, klippa till och se till att jag har för att kunna börja sy är följande;

Observera att detta är bara ungefärliga mått på det tyg som kommer att behövas. Det kommer att justeras mer sedan.

(B= bredd H=höjd)

Bomullstyg– jag använder IKEA’s DITTE i svart

• 2 delar till siddelarna som är B 20 x H 55 cm
• Ett bakstycke av samma tyg som siddelarna – B 45 x H 55 cm
• 2 delar till foder – B 45 x H 55 cm
• Tyg till handtag, kantremsor och nederdel ca B 60 x H 55 cm av samma sort som sidstycken och bakstycke.
• Mittdel ca B 25 x H 55 cm – som ska dekoreras med ex applikationer.

Vadd

• Tunn syntet vadd – gärna ganska glesvävd - B 45 x H 110 cm (eller om man vill skarva 2 bitar B 45 x H 55 cm)

Dekoration

• Dekorationsband som Zig Zag band - ca 1 meter eller mer beroende på hur mycket man vill dekorera.
• Applikationer eller broderi till mittdelen

Jag klipper alltså till bitarna ganska generöst – eftersom det kan bli snett när man syr eller dra ihop sig när man syr samman vadd och tyg. Därför är det bra att ha lite tillgodo. Men det är ju upp till var och en hur mycket extra man lägger till. Hur man än gör så får man inte glömma sömsmåner och att det alltid drar ihop sig lite när man quiltar. Samt att man kommer ha olika sömsmån på olika ställen. Jag kommer även skära/klippa ner bitarna lite till efter det att de sytts samman.

So what I need to prepare, cut and make sure that I have ready to be able to start sewing my tote bag is as follows;

Please note that the equivalents in inches are just approximate, the most correct measurements are those given in centimeters. The measurements for fabric requirements are also approximate - I will be adjusting them later on in the process.

(W=width H=height)

Cotton fabric - I use IKEA's DITTE in black

• 2 parts of the side panels that are W 20 x H 55 centimeters      (8 x 22 inches)
• A piece of back side fabric - the same fabric as the side panels that is W 45 x H 55 centimeters (18 x 22 inches)
• Fabric for handles, “binding” and bottom approximately            W 60 x H 55 centimeters (24 x 22 inches) of the same fabric as the side panels and the fabric at the back.
• Fabric for the midsection (center part) should be about 25 centimeters (10 inches) wide and 55 centimeters (22 inches) high.

Batting

• 2 pieces of thin synthetic batting W 45 x H 55 centimeters (18 x 22 inches) or one piece W 45 x H 110 centimeters (18 x 43 inches)  

Embellishments

• Decorative ribbons like Rick Rack - about 1 meter ( 40 inches) or more depending how much you want to embellish
• Appliqué designs or embroidery designs for the midsection.

I have cut the fabric pieces rather generous - because it might not be straight once it is sewn and it could pull together a bit when I “quilt” the 3 layers together - it's always good to have some margin. But it's up to each one how much to add. Whatever you do you must not forget to add extra for the seam allowances and to compensate for the fabric pulling together a bit when quilted. I will also cut the pieces more after they are sewn together.

Inför nästa moment som är att börja sy ihop delarna så är det bra att ha förberett mittdelen med broderiet eller applikationen. Jag har broderat applikationer med ”råa kanter” (sk Raw Edge Appliqué) på min Designer Diamond. Men man kan ju lika gärna sy vanliga applikationer eller bara använda en bit snyggt mönstrat tyg. Som ni ser har jag låtit ”basting stiches” dvs den ram som sytts runt designen vara kvar. Varför "uppfinna hjulet ännu en gång" när jag redan har raka sömnadslinjer att gå efter?

Nästa gång kommer jag börja sy samman delarna till min väska.

For the next step which is to sew the pieces together - it is good to have prepared the center part with the embroidery or the appliqué. I have embroidered appliqué designs with "raw edges" (so called Raw Edge Appliqué) on my Designer Diamond. But you might as well sew ordinary appliqué designs on your sewing machine, or just use a piece of beautiful fabric. As you can see I've left "the basting stitches ", i.e. the frame, sewn around the design remain. Why "reinvent the wheel again" when I already have straight stitching lines to go by?

Next time I will start sewing together the parts for my bag.



OBS!
Jag har gjort ett litet tillägg avseende "mängden" Zig Zag band. Måttet  som först angivits gäller enbart om man vill använda  Zig Zag bandet längs sidorna på mittdelen. Vill man "dekorera" mer så måste man naturligtvis ha mer Zig Zag band.

NB.
I have made a small addition to the amount of Rick Rack to be used. The measurement that was given first is only if you use the Rick Rack to embellish the sides of the center part. If you want to embellish other parts of the bag it will require more Rick Rack.
