Quilting the layers together

Jag syr/quiltar i de ritade linjerna med en övermatare. Denna gör att de olika tyglagren inte ”drar sig”. Använd en övermatare – du kommer att märka en avsevärd skillnad i resultat.

I quilt in the drawn lines using a walking foot. The walking foot prevents the layers from shifting. Do use one – you will notice a big difference.

När du syr i linjerna på framstycket så syr du till du kommer till den söm som håller samman mittstycket med sidstycket. Gör några backstygn eller använd fästfunktionen om din symaskin har sådan. Lyft sedan pressarfoten - nål upp - och flytta pressarfoten/nålen till andra sidan av mittpartiet och sätt ner nålen där sömnadlinjen mellan mittstycke och sidstycke börjar. Börja sy, fäst med några backstygn eller använd fästfunktionen och sy sedan till den andra änden.

When sewing the lines on the front part of the bag, sew until you come to the seam that binds the middle section with the side panel. Backstitch and then lift the presser foot – needle up – and move the presser foot/needle to the other side of the center piece. Start in the seam on the other side, backstitch and then sew to the other end.

När alla linjer är sydda – så klipper man av trådarna på framsidan på mitten och drar ner tråden på översidan till baksidan. Knyt en knut och träd tråden i en synål. Dra in tråden i vadden och fäst på så sätt tråden.

When all the lines are sewn - cut the thread at the middle and then pull the thread to the back – tie a knot. Thread a sewing needle and pull the thread into the batting with a needle.

Så här ser framsidan ut efter att alla hoppstygn klippts och fästs på baksidan genom att man fäster dem inuti vadden. Lägg märke till att överdelen – som är 10 centimeter – inte är quiltad. Jag har markerat den sista quiltade linjen på fotot med en streckad linje för att ni ska se var jag slutat.

This is what the front side of the bag looks like after all the jump stitches are cut and pulled into the batting on the back. Note that the top part – 10 centimeters (4 inches) – is left un-quilted. The last quilted line is marked with a dotted line so that you can see where I stopped quilting.

För att ta bort resterna av kritan så bortstar jag i olika riktning med en klädborste. Ni vet en sådan med ”sammetssula”.  Men kom ihåg att ta bort knappnålarna innan du börjar borsta tyget!

Nästa gång kommer jag visa hur jag sätter dit Zig Zag banden. Jag kan redan nu säga att jag kommer att använda ungefär dubbelt så mycket Zig Zag band som jag tänkte från början eftersom jag insåg att det kommer bli snyggt att täcka ytterligare några kanter. Dessutom ska jag visa vad jag tänkt göra med bottenpartiet på väskan.

To remove the remains of the chalk I brush the fabric in different directions with the cloth brush with the “velvet-like” sole. But remember to remove the pins before you start brushing the fabric!!

Next time I will show you how to add the Rick Rack. But I can tell you now  that I have decided to use twice as much Rick Rack as I had planned from the beginning. While sewing I realized there were some other edges that would definitively benefit from being covered.

I will also show you what to do with the part that is still not quilted in the bottom of the bag.
