Finishing the tote bag

Så där ja nu är vi äntligen framme vid slutet av sömnaden av denna väska/kasse.

Jag hoppas att ni tycker det varit roligt att ”sy med” och att ni fått inspiration att skapa egna väskor. Detta är naturligtvis bara ett sätt att göra det på.

There you go – we’ve finally arrived at the end of the stitching of this tote bag.

I hope you’ve enjoyed creating your own bag or that you been inspired to create your own bags. Of course this is only one way to do it.

För att sy ihop väskan har jag bestämt mig för att inte sy kanterna inåt utan helt enkelt täcka över kanterna med en kantremsa.

Jag har skurit till 2 remsor som är ca 60 cm långa och 5 cm breda. Jag kommer att sy med en sömsmån som är 1 cm.

For sewing the sides of the bag I have decided not to sew with the seam allowance on the inside - I will simply cover the edges with a binding.

I have cut two strips that are about 60 centimeters (23 ½ inches) long and 5 centimeters (2 inches) wide. I will use a seam allowance that is 10 millimeters.

Jag börjar med att nåla ihop väskan upptill och i närheten av sidorna så att kanterna passar ihop exakt.

I start by pinning the bag together at the top and around the sides so the edges are perfectly aligned.

Sen lägger jag kantremsan jämt fördelat längs ena långsidan på framsidan av väskan – räta mot räta. Det bör vara lika mycket tyg överskjutande vid var kant. Sy med 1 cm sömsmån. Pressa remsan uppåt.

I then put the fabric strip evenly along one side on the front side of the bag - right sides together. Leave equal amount of excess fabric at each end. Sew with a 10 millimeters seam allowance. Press the strip upwards. This will be a single fold binding.

Jag väljer att sy på remsan helt på maskin. Jag klipper av den utskjutande delen så det är ca 4-5 cm kvar. Jag viker upp den likt på bilden och håller fast med en knappnål. Gör likadant på andra sidan.

I choose to sew the binding completely on my machine. I cut off the binding at each side so there is about 4-5 centimeters (1 ½ - 2 inches) left. I fold it up like in the photo above and fasten it with a pin. Repeat on the other side.

Sen viker jag in en fåll på kantremsan och mäter så att den täcker sömmen med ca 1-2 mm. Pressa till med nageln.

Jag tar jag min kartongbit och viker över lika mycket på hela remsan och pressar så jag har en rak kant. Vik nu över kantremsan så den täcker den sist sydda sömmen på kantremsan. Vill man så kan man ta lite limstift på sömsmånen och sen pressa fast kantremsan med strykjärnet, då ligger den definitivt still.

I then fold the strip, with a “hem” so that the edge of the fold covers the seam with 1-2 millimeters. Press with your fingernail.

I use my piece of cardboard and fold the strip over the edge so that the fold is equally all over the strip. I then press the binding over the edge of the cardboard so I get a straight edge on my binding. Now fold the binding over so that it covers the last stitched seam. You can put some glue stick on the seam allowance and then press the edge with an iron on low/medium heat.
